Coy L. Ramey, 87, of Rose Hill passed away September 9 at Lee Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of the Free Pentecostal Church in Rose Hill

He served in the US Army in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Ramey and sister, Mary Scott.

Elmer Ayers
(March 22, 1941 - September 12, 2011)

Elmer “Fireball” Ayers, 70, of Ewing, Virginia, passed away Monday (September 12, 2011) at the home of his son, Clayton Ayers.

He was a member of Shawanee Pentecostal Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Luster Ayers; his mother, Sarah Sutton Ayers; and one brother, Lee Calvin Ayers.

Surviving are:

Two sons: Clayton Ayers and wife, Candace and Travis Ayers

Four daughters: Elaine Ayers, Rachel Ayers, Freida Wagoner, and Virginia Colwell

Nine grandchildren

Three great-grandchildren

Three brothers: John Ayers and wife, Tivie; Rondle Ayers and wife, Redella; and Franklin “Cart” Ayers and wife, Laura

One sister: Ann Ayers

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Rose Hill, Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jody Moore officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Hill Cemetery in Ewing, Virginia.

Paul Edgar Shirks born Wednesday, February 7, 1934 in Roan County, TN and left for his Heavenly home on Sunday, September 11, 2011 after a long battle of cancer at the age of 77 years. He retired as a coal miner and was of the Christian Faith. He was preceded in death his parents, James Frank and Mamie Lou Shirks, wife Rosa Lee Shirks, granddaughter, Tillia Lou Ann Baker, sisters, Helen Middleton and Margaret Green, brothers, William Howard Stapleton and Ralph Odel Phillips, Jr.

Paul is survived by his daughters, Lisa Shirks Trapp of Ft. Blackmore, Va. and Debra Shirks of Dryden, Va., one son, Jordan Paul Shirks of the home and his companion, Dovie Bolling. He is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Byrd, Betty Collingsworth and Tammy Carter all of Pennington Gap, Va. and brothers, Bill Shirks, Earl Shirks, Richard Shirks, David Shirks and Gary Shirks all of Pennington Gap, Va., Grandchildren, Shanda Sexton, Stephanie Lawson, Amber Rose Young, Landon Cole Tigner, great-grandchildren, Isaiah Dougherty, Christopher Sexton, Elijah Sexton and Bryson Sexton, special friend, Ricky Cooper, adopted grandson, Dustin Morelock and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and special nephews, Rick, Doug and Everett Green, Donnie Middleton and Rick Middleton and special, nieces Norma Davis and Sherry Christenson and special friends, Diane and Chester Dean and long time friend, Johnny Carroll.

JP Fultz of Ewing, Va. was born in Pennington Gap, Va. on Friday, February 13, 1948 and passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 63 years. He had been a resident of Delaware for several years before returning to Lee County about 40 years ago. He worked as a general laborer and was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Reba Owens and father, Theodore Fultz.

JP is survived by one sister, Belinda Owens of Ewing, Va., one half-sister, Patricia Yeary of Jonesville, Va., one aunt, Wilma Jean Pennington of Woodway, Va. and many cousins.

The memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 18, 2011 at the Cecil-Fry Cemetery in Pennington Gap, Va. with Rev. Jim Blevins officiating.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 PM Sunday for the service.

Pennington Gap, VA Marion Elizabeth (Dee) Mooney Hobbs passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Lee Regional Medical Center. She was born on January 31, 1919 in Olinger, VA and had lived her entire life in Lee County. She worked briefly at the Pennington Elementary School and the Lee County Sheriff's Department. She was a member of the Long Hollow Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roth Hobbs, parents, William and Ola Wardrup Mooney, Two brothers, and three sisters. Survivors include four sons: Glen Hobbs and wife Alana, Elton Hobbs and wife Judy, Ray Hobbs and wife Sharon, Dana Hobbs and wife Carlenia. Three daughters: Linda Lucas and husband Ray, Gola Kirk and husband Clinton, Teresa Cope and husband Campbell. One brother, Thomas Mooney. 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren,2 great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p. m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA.

Conn Terry, 86, of Pennington Gap, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (September 21, 2011) at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

He was a lifelong resident of Lee County and a retired coal miner of over thirty years.

Conn was a veteran of the US Army and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn & Carrie Terry; sisters, Juanita Roop, Helen Wright, Mary Jane Hines, Erma Jean Morrrow and Marie VanNastrand and brothers, Leslie Terry and Hagan Terry.

Charlie Green of Cranks, Ky. was born in Cranks on Wednesday, March 4, 1925 and passed away, Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Harlan Health and Rehab Center in Harlan, Ky. at the age of 86 years. He retired as a coal miner was a member of the UMWA and of the Pentecostal Faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Green, parents, Palmer and Sallie Green, one brother, Cephus Green and one sister, Margie Cooper.

Charlie is survived by two sons, Earnest Green and wife, Darlene of Stone Creek, Va. and Earnest Lynn Green of Dryden,Va., one daughter, Loretta Pennington and husband, Eddie of Gallian, Oh., seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating.

E.W. (Roe) Warner, 97, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (September 27, 2011) at his residence.

A lifelong resident of Lee County, Virginia, he was a member of Flatwoods United Methodist Church and the Wynn Masonic Lodge #221 for over 60 years.

He was a farmer and founder of Lee Tractor and Implement Company and Sunny Acres Recreation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Byrd Newman Warner, his parents, John T. and Media Combs Warner; one granddaughter, Vicki Bledsoe Leytze; two brothers, Bill Warner and Joe Warner; and one sister, Gaynelle Bowen.

Olga S. Chadwell, 96, of Ewing passed away on Wednesday, September 28 at Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of Morley Memorial Methodist Church and taught school in Lee Co. for 34 years.

Mrs. Chadwell was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Chadwell; sister, Maude Gibson; and nephew, Wade Gibson.

Edgar Sawyer of Pennington Gap, Va. was born in Pineville, Ky. on Wednesday, July 4, 1934 and passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 77 years. He retired as a foreman after 22 years with the Virginia Highway Department and was a Veteran of the U.S. Airforce and also attended the Woodway Church of God. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Sue Lee and his parents, Edgar and Lydia Hoskins Sawyer.

Edgar is survived by his wife of 52 years, Vondetta Young Sawyer of the home, one son, Edgar Dwayne Sawyer of the home, one daughter, Sherry Sawyer of Pennington Gap, Va., four grandchildren, Jeffery Christian Brandon Christian, Vannessa Sawyer and Michael Sawyer, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Paul Sawyer of Atlanta, Ga. and one sister, Marie Langley of Rose Hill, Va.

Michael Rutherford
(November 21, 1964 - September 27, 2011)

Big Stone Gap, VA Michael Timothy Rutherford, a resident of the Oak Trailer Park passed away at the Lonesome Pine Hospital on September 27, 2011 after a long struggle with cancer.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother and father, Marion and Elizabeth Rutherford.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Rutherford, 2 sons, Jonathan and Murrell Rutherford of the home; 2 sisters, Brenda Rutherford of Big Stone Gap, Della Rutherford, Wise, VA. 1 brother, Robert Rutherford of Radford, VA. 5 brothers in law and sisters in law as well as several nieces and nephews.

Also Michael has many loving friends and one very special friend, Diann Vaughn.

Michael’s wish was to be cremated so there will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.

Memorial services for Michael will be held at 1:00 p. m. Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Bread of Life Ministeries with Rev. Faye Poff officiating.

William Russell Carter of Pennington Gap, Va., was born in the Stone Creek Community of Pennington Gap on Saturday, April 15, 1922 and passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. at the age of 89 years. He retired as a coal miner after 35 years, was a member of the UMWA and the Admant Baptist Church in Stone Creek. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Marines during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Rosa Kirk Carter, three brothers, Blair Carter, Roy Carter and Ed Carter, three sisters, Minnie Witt, Myrtle Lawson and Lillie Harris and one great-grandson, Landen Orr.

Russell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Stewart Carter of the home, two sons William Carter and wife, Jan and Brian Carter and wife, Kelly all of Jonesville, Va., one daughter, Judy Cristello and husband, Samuel of Franklinton, LA, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dryden, VA Mary Elizabeth Gilbert, age 92 passed away early Saturday morning October 1, 2011 at the Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, VA.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Dryden, VA and was a long time member of the Dryden Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence in 2003, and her daughter, Carol Elkins in 2005. She was a loving wife to Clarence, a loving mother to Carol and Buddy, loving grandmother to David, and a loving great grandmother to Tessa and Chelsea.

Mary is survived by her son, Buddy Gilbert and wife, Lois, Bristol, TN, one grandson, David Bishop, Bristol, TN, two great granddaughters, Tessa Salyers and husband Eric, Kansas City, Kansas, and Chelsea Bishop, Blountville, TN. Opal Jean Peters of Wurtland, Ky. was born in Jonesville, Va. on Wednesday, February 19, 1936 and passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 in Wurtland, Ky. at the age of 75 years. She had been a resident of Wurtland for the past 41 years.

Jean was a homemaker and attended the First Assembly of God Church in Raceland, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank Peters, one son, Ernest Steven Peters, parents, Marvin J. and Flora Lockhart Hall, two brothers, Loran Hall and Champ Hall and five sisters, Ruth Poe, Carrie Alsup, Mae Anderson, Molly G. Greer and Mary A. Dykes.

Jean is survived by two sons William Michael Peters of Stickleyville, Va. and Dennis W. Peters of Wurtland, Ky., seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, one brother, A.C. Hall of Damascus, Md. and one sister, Joy E. Drummond of Waldorf, Md.

Henry L. Smallwood, 63, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (October 5, 2011) at the Wellmont Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia.

He was a member of Colliers Chapel Pentecostal Church in Jonesville, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his father, Garland Smallwood and sister, Fannie Smallwood.

Geneva Hyden Glass of Jonesville, Va. was born in Lee County, Va. on Saturday, March 9, 1929 and passed away in the comfort of her home on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the age of 82 years. She had lived her entire life in Lee County, Va.

Geneva was the daughter of the late Charlie and Sarah Hyden of Woodway, Va. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Silas H. Glass and daughter, Vanessa Dawn Glass. She was also preceded in death by her seven sisters: Irene Shoemaker, Vernell Edens, Lucille Foster, Charcie Bradley, Aline Brooks, Blanche Hammonds and Ruby Cheek and one brother James Hyden.

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa G. Williams of Mt. Gilead, N.C., one son, Gregory D. Daniel “Danny” Gregory, 70, of Acworth, GA and formerly of Rose Hill passed away October 7 at his home after a long battle with cancer.

He was a former banker and retired from the Internal Revenue Service.

Danny attended Wildwood Baptist Church in Acworth and was a member of Broadrock Baptist Church in Richmond.

He loved country music.

Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Pauline Gregory and a nephew, Craig Crawford.

Mary was a retired seamstress and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother and friend and she loved living life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Dorothea Miles Seabolt. One infant son, Joseph Arron and two infant brothers. Also her step-mother, Pauline Warner Seabolt. Fern Coulbourne
(June 28, 1933 - October 18, 2011)

Fern M. DePew Coulbourne, 78, of Jonesville, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (October 18, 2011) at Ridgecrest Manor in Duffield, Virginia.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Jonesville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Coulbourne; her parents, Leonard and Oma Mae DePew; Nine sisters, Lucille Barnes, Irena Bowen, Mildred Nugent, Ruth Simmons, Melinda Burgess, Ina Fraley, Voida Gilliam, Sarah DePew, and Darcy DePew.

Surviving are:

Three sons: Edward Coulbourne of Flatwoods, Virginia; Ronald Coulbourne and wife, Patricia of Keymar, Maryland; and Douglas Coulbourne of Kingsport, Tennessee

One daughter: Charlene Lamb and husband, Gary of Jonesville, Virginia

Ten grandchildren

Five great grandchildren

Several nieces and nephews

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Arney-Mullins Funeral Home in Jonesville, Virginia.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Steve Neff officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to time of service.

Family will serve as pallbearers.
